The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother Father John Proppe who passed away on Tuesday evening, March 31, 2015 at St. John Riverside Hospital, Yonkers, NY at the age of 94. Fr. John was born on December 19, 1920 in New York City. He attended St. John the Baptist grade school, New York City [1926-34] and St. Mary Seraphicate, Garrison, NY [1934-39]. The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother Father John Proppe who passed away on Tuesday evening, March 31, 2015 at St. John Riverside Hospital, Yonkers, NY at the age of 94. Fr. John was born on December 19, 1920 in New York City. He attended St. John the Baptist grade school, New York City [1926-34] and St. Mary Seraphicate, Garrison, NY [1934-39]. He entered the Capuchins in 1939 at St. Felix Friary, Huntington, IN receiving the name Agnellus. Fr. John pronounced his perpetual vows on August 27, 1943 at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY and was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1947 at the Church of St. Mary, Marathon, WI. In 1948 he served as a parochial assistant at both St. John the Baptist Church [NYC] and St. Francis Church [Milwaukee, WI] while studying Japanese in preparation for service in our newly established Japanese mission. Fr. John served as a missionary in various mission stations in the Ryukyu Islands from 1948-1959 and in the Marianas Islands from 1960-1969. Father returned to the States where he ministered as a parochial assistant at St. John the Baptist Church, NYC [1970] and St. Pius X, Middletown, CT [1970-73]. In 1973, Fr. John began his 28 year ministry as a health-care chaplain at the VA hospital in Canandaigua, NY with residence at St. Fidelis Friary, Interlaken, NY [1973-1985]; Kateri Nursing Home, NYC [1985-86]; and Rosary Hill Home, Hawthorne, NY [1986-2001]. Since April 4, 2001, Fr. John has been a member of the Capuchin Franciscan senior community at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Friary, Yonkers, NY 10703. Father was survived by a nephew Robert and his wife Lois of Middletown, NY and a niece Susan of Hampton Bays, LI, NY. Viewing will be held at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, N.Y. on Tuesday April 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, we will kindly receive your donations for the continued care of our senior friars who reside at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703.
