Born in Striyj Ukraine on January 23, 1924 near Lviv. He was the oldest of nine siblings. He fought during WWII with the Ukrainian Partisan Army and later with the US forces. After the war he made his way to Germany where he lived and worked for 7 years and was active in CYM. In 1952 he left Germany for England and in 1954 he met a Alice Sidebottom. On March 15, 1956 they were married in Ashton, England just outside Manchester. In 1958 they emigrated to the United States. Peter James was born in 1960 and my sister Anna in 1962. Jakym instilled values to go to church on Sunday, to be respectful, to be kind and to work hard. Jakym worked very hard to build his American dream. He was employed by Horn & Hardart and Key Food where he was a Teamster for over 35 years. He taught his children and grandchildren to remember their Ukrainian heritage. He loved his summer vacations at Soyuzivka where he had many friends and all knew him as Pan Kozak! A real Ukrainian! He was known as Grandpa Jim, the riverkeeper of the dog park behind his house in Greenburgh.
